Boeing offers Iran 3 models of aircraft

Boeing Co. has offered Iran 3 models of new aircraft, namely 737, 787 and 777 series, said Maqsoud Asa’di-Samani, the secretary of the Society of Iranian Airlines.

After holding a two-day meeting with the Boeing delegation in Tehran from April 10 to 11, the managing directors of seven Iranian companies, that use Boeing aircrafts in their fleet, announced that they would review the offers according to their requirements, Asa’di-Samani was quoted as saying.

Supporting the current fleet of Iran and providing parts and services to the fleet has been the main focus of the negotiations.

“Boeing’s cooperation in supporting the current airplanes of Iran and its loyalty to its commitments will contribute to decisions for purchasing airplanes from Boeing,” the Iranian official said.

Iranian airlines have some 60 Boeing airplanes in service, but most were purchased before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

International sanctions which barred Iran from buying western aircrafts was lifted in January after the two sides reached an agreement over Iran’s nuclear program.

According to Transport and Urban Development Minister Abbas Akhoundi, Iran is seeking to modernize as soon as possible its ageing passenger plane fleet which has been badly hit by sanctions over the past few years.

The minister said Iran currently has just 150 operational planes out of a fleet of more than 250.

Now though, with the nuclear deal in place, airline manufacturers can re-enter the market, though Boeing has been more hesitant than its European competitor Airbus.

Previously, Boeing said that its license from the U.S. Treasury Department only allowed it to offer “commercial passenger aircraft fleet planning.”

In late March, a U.S. State Department negotiator on the nuclear deal said nothing under the deal would stop Boeing from making a deal with Iranian airlines.

Since the deal took effect earlier this year, Iran Air has signed agreements to buy 118 planes from the European consortium Airbus and 20 more from French-Italian aircraft manufacturer ATR. Other European companies have pushed into Iran as well.

E-bike built by Irani Students

Students of Tehran’s Khajeh Nasir Toosi University of Technology managed to build an electric bicycle which can run up to 40 kilometers per charge.

As air pollution is one of the main problems that metropolises, especially Tehran are struggling with, using bicycles can be a viable option over cars, Mahmoud Karimi the head of the design team said on the sidelines of the unveiling ceremony of the bicycle on Thursday.

However, one of the problems of the most cities in Iran are steep streets and pavements which make it difficult to ride a bicycle on, therefore many would give up the idea of riding a bike, Mehr news agency quoted Karimi as saying.

Badpaye Nasir, the aforesaid electric bicycle, is a dual purpose bike in a sense that it can move forward both using pedals and electricity, he added.

While pedaling the batteries which are installed on the bike can be charged and while riding on a steep street the rider can switch to the batteries instead of pedaling, he explained.

The batteries can last for 10 to 20 kilometers, Karimi said. However, if both the pedals and the batteries are used properly, the bicycle can even run up to 40 kilometers per charge, he added. “Moreover, one can keep track of the speed, the road map and the state-of-charge of the battery on their cellphones.”

“We are planning on negotiating with Tehran’s municipality in order to mass-produce the bike,” Karimi noted. / Tehran times /

Iran signs deals to export 700,000bpd of oil to Europe

Iran has signed deals to export 700,000 barrels of oil per day to Europe, Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said after a meeting with EU Climate Action and Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Canete in Tehran on Saturday.

“Iran has already signed deals to export 700,000 barrels of oil per day to Europe, but the whole volume is not currently taken. I think it may be possible within the next few months,” Zanganeh said.

EU is very interested in long-term cooperation with Iran and sees Iran a reliable and dependable partner to meet its energy needs, he added.

Before the EU embargo on Iran in 2012, Europe imported on average about 400,000 barrels of oil a day from Iran, according to the International Energy Agency. Spanish refiner Cepsa alone was buying about 60,000 barrels a day. Total SA was among the biggest purchasers. Other European top buyers in the past included Repsol SA, Eni SpA and Hellenic Petroleum SA.

Museum of Dolls in Natanz

A museum of local handmade dolls opened in the small town of Natanz, Isfahan Province on April 15.

The ‘Rahgoshay’ museum, named after its founder Dr. Mohammad Rahgoshay, has 34 dollhouses in which over 150 handmade dolls are displayed, IRNA reported.

Rahgoshay is a veteran geologist who has always shown interest in and concern over the maintenance and preservation of Iran’s historical buildings and cultural heritage.

“That is why I restored my family home in 1993 and turned it to a home museum,” he said.

The place holds antique and priceless objects, besides the new doll collection made of different materials, including fabric, cotton and wood. All the exhibited dolls have an identity and are registered in a catalogue.

“The dolls epitomize real characters and represent different professions common in the city,” Rahgoshay said.

The collection is a reminder of the local customs, traditions and professions and aims to contribute and preserve Iran’s valuable heritage. All the materials used in the dolls are natural and environment-friendly stuff with the aim to help protect the environment.

Additionally, doll making can provide a second job and supplementary income for poor families, he noted.

President addressing the OIC Summit: Any divisive move at OIC surely invalid

Strengthening relations with the Muslim Countries is one top priority for the Islamic Republic of Iran and any divisive move in the OIC is surely invalid, said President addressing the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Summit in Istanbul.

In this event that happened on Thursday in Istanbul, Turkey, Dr Rouhani said: “Discords in the Muslim World is a crisis for all of us and solving the disputes and misunderstandings is possible merely through diplomatic ways and by peaceful means and negotiations”.

The full text of President’s speech is as follows:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

‘And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favour of Allah upon you – when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favour, brothers’. (Holy Quran)

Your Excellency Mr Erdoğan,

Honourable President of the brother country of Turkey and the Chairman of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Summit,

Honourable Presidents of the Islamic Countries,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

At the outset, I want to congratulate Your Excellency for the warm hospitality of the Turkish state and nation and wish you prosperity and success.

Today, we have convened with the motto of ‘Unity and Solidarity for Justice and Peace’ in the beautiful and historical city of Istanbul and it is a great opportunity to ponder the common fate of all Muslims in the world.

Some centuries ago, when the Islamic civilization was at its zenith of power, no one assumed that one day, they (Muslim) would become so weak in dealing with the western civilisation which owed Muslims very much in terms of scientific growth or the day that the Islamic civilisation which encompassed all schools of thought and tribes and had established peaceful coexistence among them, maybe no one assumed that sectarian violence and extremism would rampant among Muslims in a way that assassination of one Muslim with the hands of another Muslim to become so habitual.

The truth is that the decline of the Islamic civilization started when the big powers in the Islamic civilization fruitlessly confronted one another instead of exercising synergy and prepared the grounds for aggression of the foreigners.

And today history is repeating itself. Widespread political, economic, cultural and especially intellectual and doctrinal aggression has stiffened, but in a new form in which they have brought Islam against Islam and branch against branch, as well as extremist and takfiri groups which everyone knows where and how they have been formed and how they are being backed, killing Muslims and non-Muslims in large numbers through the most violent and cruel way possible. Pure violence has prevailed over Islamic kindness and ignorant values have replaced Islamic moral values. Regretfully, since these atrocities occur under the name of Islam, the main victims are the Islamic principles and values.

The Muslim World does not deserve to be target of insecurity, violence and organized terrorism which will bring it backwardness and lack of development. Rather, it deserves to have a significant place; and this is not possible unless we ponder our surrounding world with more concern.

Our deeds and not our claims or titles will be judged by the Muslims.

Some anti-Islam groups are rendering financial and military aid to defame Islam and this should be prevented.

When hundreds of billions of US dollars from the pocket of Islamic Ummah is spent on military arsenals, how can we talk about Islamic unity and persuade the youths to talk about blessings of Islam?

Islam has taught us that crimes under any name or title are regarded as crime and that it makes no difference it occurs in Palestine, Lahore, Beirut, Damascus, Istanbul or New York. What matters, is that we know the roots and grounds and attempt to confront it by firm resolve.

Excellencies,

The Islamic Republic of Iran avoids any tension and instability in the region and always seeks solidarity and unity among Islamic Ummah. Iran is to help other countries to resolve their disputes through negotiations under a constructive atmosphere.

Honourable Leaders of the Islamic Countries;

It is crystal clear that neither Saudi Arabia is regarded as Iran’s problem nor Iran is regarded as Saudi’s problem, the main issue is ignorance, prejudice and violence which are now regarded as main hurdle and root cause of discords in the Islamic World.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has always backed Muslim countries and Muslims against aggressions, threats, occupation and terrorism.

The day Saddam invaded Kuwait, it was Iran that condemned the move before others and sheltered Kuwaiti and Iraqi refugees.

When takfiri terrorists approached the gates of Baghdad and Irbil, it was Iran that helped Iraqi nation and government against their savage atrocities.

When Damascus was on the verge of occupation and annihilation, it was Iran that stood by Syrian people.

When Gaza was under attack by the Zionists, Iran and Hizbullah stood by Palestinian nation the same as they backed Lebanese nation.

If one day terrorists want to attack any Islamic states or religious place, and in case we are requested to confront them, Iran will never hesitate.

Ladies and Gentlemen;

No divisive message should be sent from the OIC Summit which has been held with the name of unity; and any divisive measure is definitely invalid in that it does not accompany the consensus of this organisation and the Islamic Ummah and is in contrast with its founding philosophy.

It is our duty to seriously deal with any violence, extremism by resorting to the Holy Quran, Islamic World should be an exemplary model for a moderate society.

I appreciate your attention

Peace, mercy and blessings of God be upon you all.

To the Youth in Europe and North America

Message of ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Leader of The Islamic Republic of Iran

In the name of God, the Beneficent the Merciful

To the Youth in Europe and North America,

The recent events in France and similar ones in some other Western countries have convinced me to directly talk to you about them. I am addressing you, [the youth], not because I overlook your parents, rather it is because the future of your nations and countries will be in your hands; and also I find that the sense of quest for truth is more vigorous and attentive in your hearts.

I don’t address your politicians and statesmen either in this writing because I believe that they have consciously separated the route of politics from the path of righteousness and truth.

I would like to talk to you about Islam, particularly the image that is presented to you as Islam. Many attempts have been made over the past two decades, almost since the disintegration of the Soviet Union, to place this great religion in the seat of a horrifying enemy. The provocation of a feeling of horror and hatred and its utilization has unfortunately a long record in the political history of the West.

Here, I don’t want to deal with the different phobias with which the Western nations have thus far been indoctrinated. A cursory review of recent critical studies of history would bring home to you the fact that the Western governments’ insincere and hypocritical treatment of other nations and cultures has been censured in new historiographies.

The histories of the United States and Europe are ashamed of slavery, embarrassed by the colonial period and chagrined at the oppression of people of color and non-Christians. Your researchers and historians are deeply ashamed of the bloodsheds wrought in the name of religion between the Catholics and Protestants or in the name of nationality and ethnicity during the First and Second World Wars. This approach is admirable.

By mentioning a fraction of this long list, I don’t want to reproach history; rather I would like you to ask your intellectuals as to why the public conscience in the West awakens and comes to its senses after a delay of several decades or centuries. Why should the revision of collective conscience apply to the distant past and not to the current problems? Why is it that attempts are made to prevent public awareness regarding an important issue such as the treatment of Islamic culture and thought?

You know well that humiliation and spreading hatred and illusionary fear of the “other” have been the common base of all those oppressive profiteers. Now, I would like you to ask yourself why the old policy of spreading “phobia” and hatred has targeted Islam and Muslims with an unprecedented intensity. Why does the power structure in the world want Islamic thought to be marginalized and remain latent? What concepts and values in Islam disturb the programs of the super powers and what interests are safeguarded in the shadow of distorting the image of Islam? Hence, my first request is: Study and research the incentives behind this widespread tarnishing of the image of Islam.

My second request is that in reaction to the flood of prejudgments and disinformation campaigns, try to gain a direct and firsthand knowledge of this religion. The right logic requires that you understand the nature and essence of what they are frightening you about and want you to keep away from.

I don’t insist that you accept my reading or any other reading of Islam. What I want to say is: Don’t allow this dynamic and effective reality in today’s world to be introduced to you through resentments and prejudices. Don’t allow them to hypocritically introduce their own recruited terrorists as representatives of Islam.

Receive knowledge of Islam from its primary and original sources. Gain information about Islam through the Qur’an and the life of its great Prophet. I would like to ask you whether you have directly read the Qur’an of the Muslims. Have you studied the teachings of the Prophet of Islam and his humane, ethical doctrines? Have you ever received the message of Islam from any sources other than the media?

Have you ever asked yourself how and on the basis of which values has Islam established the greatest scientific and intellectual civilization of the world and raised the most distinguished scientists and intellectuals throughout several centuries?

I would like you not to allow the derogatory and offensive image-buildings to create an emotional gulf between you and the reality, taking away the possibility of an impartial judgment from you. Today, the communication media have removed the geographical borders. Hence, don’t allow them to besiege you within fabricated and mental borders.

Although no one can individually fill the created gaps, each one of you can construct a bridge of thought and fairness over the gaps to illuminate yourself and your surrounding environment. While this preplanned challenge between Islam and you, the youth, is undesirable, it can raise new questions in your curious and inquiring minds. Attempts to find answers to these questions will provide you with an appropriate opportunity to discover new truths.

Therefore, don’t miss the opportunity to gain proper, correct and unbiased understanding of Islam so that hopefully, due to your sense of responsibility toward the truth, future generations would write the history of this current interaction between Islam and the West with a clearer conscience and lesser resentment.

Afghan ‘Red Roses’ Festival

The second gathering of Afghan refugees called ‘Dasht-e-Gol-e-Sorkh’ (literally ‘Red Roses Field’) will be held on April 21 at Khavaran Cultural Center in south Tehran.

Afghans living in Iran will gather on the day to sing the song “Let’s go to Mazar-i-Sharif and celebrate the New Year,” Alef News Agency reported.

People in that country celebrate Nouruz or New Year in Mazar-i-Sharif (the third largest city in Afghanistan) because it is the epicenter of festivities in the country.

Visitors from Tajikistan, India, Pakistan, and Syria also take part in the Afghan festival where the pavilions present an excellent opportunity to get familiar with the rituals, traditions and culture of Iran’s neighboring country.

Afghan traditional music, handicrafts, and apparel will also be introduced at the festival.

Tehran Book Garden Ready

With the construction phase over, the Tehran Book Garden is ready to be stacked with books; however, as publishers are busy preparing for the 29th Tehran International Book Fair (TIBF), May 5-15, the books will be supplied later.

Announcing this on Sunday, Majid Hosseini, director-general of Nashr-e-Shahr (City Publication) Institute, which is in charge of the project, said that although the Book Garden was to open in May, its inauguration has been postponed to a later date, yet to be announced, due to the launching of the Sun City Exhibition Complex, coinciding with the opening of the annual boo fair, IRNA quoted him as saying.

The Book Garden was one of the options to host the TIBF but ultimately officials opted for Sun City. Nevertheless, unlike the rather far location of Sun City, on Tehran-Qom Highway, near Imam Khomeini International Airport in the south of Tehran, the Book Garden is easier to access as it is located in Abasabad Hills in north-central Tehran.

Furthermore, covering a total area of 65,000-square-meter indoor exhibition space, one of the largest of its kind, it will run around the year, providing ample space and amenities to help promote book reading.

The vast collection of books will be suitable for people of any status and age. Special areas will cater to the needs of children and adolescents.

In addition, there are two amphitheaters to host theatrical performances and four research departments where university teachers can hold study sessions with students.

Other features include a book therapy clinic, sections for stationeries, multimedia products and e-books, and six assembly halls.

Children’s Section

A separate section is dedicated to children and young adults which besides presenting books suitable for their age, will provide them with a large number of activities to keep them entertained while parents visit the other parts of the exhibition.

Special events such as commemorating birth anniversaries of prominent poets and writers will also be organized to promote authors and their works.

The open grounds surrounding the buildings, covering 45,000 square meters, includes an artificial lake, a restaurant and a coffee shop. A parking area for up to 5,000 cars is being planned for the new venue.

Tehran Book Garden is located on Haqqani Highway, adjacent to the National Library and Archives Organization of Iran (NLAI).

It is part of Abasabad Cultural Complex which also includes Nature Bridge, Flag Tower, Gonbad Mina (Enamel Dome) Planetarium, Art Garden, Sacred Defense Garden Museum and Flower Garden.
