Igloo-Style Resort Approved

The general plan to build Iran’s first igloo-style tourist resort in Qazvin has been approved by the city council and the municipality.

The idea of the innovative multi-purpose complex, which was put forward by an unnamed private stakeholder, was discussed in the meeting of the high council for investment attended by the members of the council, the mayor and deputy mayors of Qazvin. It was approved unanimously.

The scheme includes portable igloo-style (semispherical) suites of 20 to 25 square meters which will be built in Barajin National Park once preliminary studies are completed. The project will be fully funded by the private sector.

“Staying in such facilities offers tourists a different and unique experience,” said Nasser Ganji, investment and public participation deputy at Qazvin Municipality.

Emphasizing that the project is ecofriendly, Ganji said the fact that this innovative project was completely designed by Iranian architects and will be funded by domestic investors makes it all the more special.

“The resort will be visually attractive and have a unique appearance,” the official said, adding that it is a low-cost project. “Should the project prove to be a success, we’ll expand it,” Ganji noted.

World renowned Iranian filmmaker Majid Majidi was named the Islamic Revolution Artist of the Year, the selection having been made for the first time on Tuesday by the Art Bureau.

He received the title for making “Muhammad (S), the Messenger of God”, his acclaimed epic on the childhood of the Prophet of Islam (S).

Majidi was honored at Andisheh Hall during a ceremony attended by a large number of cineastes and cultural figures.

“I don’t deserve this title,” said Majid and added, “The real artists are martyrs who prepared the ground for us in obscurity and modesty.”

He remembered Morteza Avini, the acclaimed documentarian who was martyred by a landmine in 1993 when he was making a documentary in the former Iran-Iraq war zone in southwestern Iran, and said, “He supported me early in my career.”

Actors Parviz Parastui and Hossein Mosafer Astaneh; filmmakers Javad Afshar and Hadi Mohammadian, and painter Abdolhamid Qadirian; graphic designer Danial Forrokh; and authors Sara Erfani and Behnaz Zarrabi were also nominated for the title.

Majidi hired a group of renowned international craftsmen and artists, including director of photography Vittorio Storaro, editor Roberto Perpignani, special effects designer Scott E. Anderson, makeup designer Gianetto De Rossi and Indian composer A. R. Rahman, to make “Muhammad (S), the Messenger of God”, which he believes shows a proper perception of Islam.

The film was selected as Iran’s submission to the 88th Academy Awards in the best foreign language film category. However, it was not nominated by the competition that nominated his “Children of Heaven” in 1998. / Tehran times /

Maya Civilization Expo

An art and culture exhibition of the Maya civilization will be held in Tehran later this year, according to Muhammad Reza Kargar, director of museum affairs at Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization.

Based on an agreement last year between the ICHHTO and Mexico’s cultural authorities, the Central American nation will loan over 250 artifacts dating from Preclassic and Classic Mayan periods to more recent times to Iran for display at the National Museum in the capital.

This will be the first collection of historical artifacts of a foreign civilization to be exhibited in Iran. The exhibition will last for five months, ILNA reported.

Pointing to the people’s dismay about the fact that other countries are not eager to display their artifacts in Iran, Kargar said the move by Mexico can and will pave the way for future exhibitions by other nations.

He admitted that “there is a lack of standard facilities” to display antiquities loaned from other countries, and said the problem must be addressed.
